Etymology

Uncertain. According to Schleicher, from *pir (“skin”) +‎ *waŋ (“red”). Meira & Drude reconstruct Proto-Tupian *pɨraŋ, but they admit the protoform could be exclusive to Proto-Aweti-Guarani.^[1]
