Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *nerˀtei. According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *ner- (“to cover, conceal”), but giving no cognates outside of Balto-Slavic.[1] However, there is also *nér (“below the surface”).

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian nérti (“to dive”).
