Etymology

    Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *blaiskas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyǵ- + *-skъ. A direct cognate with Latvian blaiskums, blaizgums (spot) and related to Lithuanian blizgas (glimmer), akin to the 0-grade *blьskъ (< *bliskas). Outside of Balto-Slavic, related to Proto-Germanic *blaikaz (pale) whence German Blitz (lightning).
