    From *ju (“already”) +‎ *že (“so that, since”), the former from a Proto-Balto-Slavic *jau (“already”) and cognate with Latvian jàu and Lithuanian jaũ (“already”); see there for more.[1][2][3]

    Alternatively, the first part might possibly be *u, in which case this would be a cognate with Proto-Germanic *auk, Ancient Greek αὖγε (aûge).[3]
