Compare also Yuchi wedi (“bovine”), wadįga (“bison”), wedza (“hog”). Lewis Ballard suggests the Yuchi prefix we-/wa- (animate prefix) may be of non-Yuchi origin.

Reconstruction notes

The nasal vowel in Mandan shows irregular development, though notably parallels the nasal in Yuchi wadįga (“bison”). The development of cluster *pt in Mississippi Valley languages follows a pattern also seen in Proto-Siouan *isá·ptą (“five”) (Proto-Mississippi-Valley *sáptą).
