Very widely attested in peripheral branches of Sino-Tibetan, but completely absent in any branch with an ancient literary tradition.

The alternation between presence and absence of a velar initial consonant has not been resolved. Further study of uvular initial correspondences outside of rGyalrongic, Chinese, Tibetan, and Burmese is needed before assigning any uvular initials to this root. There is also the question of the initial w- in the Nungish reflexes.
