From Proto-Iranian *tixtáh, from Proto-Iranian *tiktás, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tig-tó-s, from *(s)teyg- (“to be sharp”) +‎ *-tós. Cognate with Yidgha [script needed] (taγd), Sarikoli tēid (“sharp”), Sanskrit तिक्त (tiktá, “bitter”).
