Etymology

Uncertain, however, likely cognate with Sanskrit तरु (tarú, “tree”),^[1]^[2] possibly from *taru (“tree”) +‎ *-tyā, from Proto-Iranian *tarú, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tarú, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dóru (“tree”), perhaps via an unknown intermediary Proto-Indo-European language, compare Hittite 𒋫𒊒 (taru, “tree”).
