Etymology

Traditionally traced back to Proto-Uralic *juma, ultimately borrowed Proto-Indo-Iranian *dyumā́. Cognates include Proto-Finnic *jumala.

However, according to Aikio (2025), more likely from Proto-Uralic *jilma (and cognate with Proto-Finnic *ilma).[1]
