Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hgāráyati, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁gor-éye-ti, from *h₁ger- (to wake up) +‎ *-éyeti (eye-causative suffix). Cognate with Sanskrit जारयति (jāráyati).
