Reconstruction:Proto-Finnic/pistü
Proto-Finnic
Etymology
From *pistädäk (“to poke, thrust, stick”) + *-ü; when something like a tool is thrust or stuck in a material (e.g. a stake into the ground), it often stays there and juts out, hence the sense “upright, erect, vertical”.
Adjective
*pistü[1]
Adverb
*pistü[1]
Reconstruction notes
The labialization of the initial vowel (*püstü) is secondary, but found in most descendants; compare *pisüdäk (ultimately from the same root).
