Etymology
Unknown.[1] Sometimes proposed to come from Proto-Uralic *woja, but this relies entirely on proposals that a related word would be found in toponyms of Udmurt origin. An alternative theory suggests derivation from the same root as *voo (“flow”) (*(v)oo- + *-ja, i.e. "flow-er, that which flows"), but this is phonologically and semantically dubious.
