Etymology

Unknown, suggested as possibly derived from a substrate.[1] Alternatively, Kallio has connected this to *nana (“nose”), which, while semantically plausible, requires irregular phonetic developments.[2] Perhaps instead one could posit a derivative like *ńenä-mä (see *-ma) with dissimilative elision instead of a dissimilative *n > *m (for the final vowel, compare *toimi, *loimi).
