Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly cognate with Proto-Samic *muottētēk (to snow) (< *matta-), but this is uncertain due to the semantic difference. Alternatively, perhaps derived from *manta (earth) as *ma(n)t- +‎ *-tadak (compare *kattadak < *kanci).
