Etymology 1

    Unclear. Possibly related to Etymology 2 (something that has been proposed especially in light of the Germanic etymology for it), but the semantics are questionable. An alternative explanation has supposed a semantic shift “descending, falling” → “the direction sun sets in” → “(north)west”, in which case the word may be derived from a verb *loota- (“to descend, fall”) (possibly from *loo-), but such a verb is entirely hypothetical.
