Etymology

Unknown root *lühV- +‎ *-üt (compare *ohut).

According to Liukkonen (1994), possibly borrowed from Proto-Baltic *lūžusī, the past active participle of [Term?] (compare Lithuanian lū́žti (“to break”)), thus literally meaning “broken (off)”.[1] This etymology is criticized by Nilsson (2001) for morphological issues.[2]
