Related to Proto-Samic *kuovtë (“central?”) (Northern Sami guovda), suggesting earlier *kawte. Possibly a Pre-Germanic borrowing, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰewd-, if the earlier meaning was “section of a riverbed”.[1]
