Reconstruction:Proto-Finnic/honka
Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Unknown.
Formally speaking could be compared to Proto-Mari *šoŋgə (“old”) (implying common *šoŋka), which in turn has been compared with Hungarian agg with the common proto-form reconstructed as *soŋka; however, *šoŋka could appear equally valid, as neither Hungarian nor most Mari dialects distinguish initial *s and *š here. The semantic narrowing makes this comparison uncertain, however. In addition, dialectal Mari evidence seems to support initial *s, which makes this comparison even less likely.[1]
