Metathesized from earlier *lĭs, from Proto-Afroasiatic *lis- (tongue). Compare Proto-Semitic *lišān-, Egyptian ns, Hausa harshè. The metathesis also occurs in *uləβ, and in Egyptian known as "Belova's law".
