Reconstruction:Proto-Bantu/kɪ̀dɪ̀mɪ̀dà
Proto-Bantu
Etymology
From *-dɪ̀ma (“to cultivate”). Hetherwick, in A Handbook of the Yao Language (1902), alleges that the noun is derived from the verb above because the appearance of the Pleiades in the sky indicated that the planting season is at hand (for the Ayawo). This would explain the applicative suffix *-ɪda at the end of the noun, as the noun could literally be translated as "object for cultivating", which would validate Hetherwick's statement.
Similarly, the Webonary entry for endimira states that the Pleiades indicate weather, proving that the etymology of the word is related to the Pleiades being a sign for something.
