Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *pérḱus (“chest, rib”). Derksen originally deemed the traditional connection with Proto-Indo-Iranian *párćuš (“rib”) (whence Sanskrit पर्शु (párśu, “rib”), Avestan 𐬞𐬀𐬭𐬀𐬱𐬎 (parašu, “rib”), Ossetian фарс (fars, “flank”)) unconvincing (presumably due to an unexpected laryngeal),[1] but later tentatively accepts the etymology, albeit with aforementioned phonetic issue still lingering.[2]
