Etymology

According to Vajda, from Proto-Na-Dene *deχ (although there are no Eyak or Tlingit cognates to serve as comparanda), which is in turn cognate with Proto-Yeniseian *dʲedʳ (“wood grouse”), from a Proto-Dene-Yeniseian form *dedʳ. This etymology has been criticized on the grounds that the Athabaskan term is likely onomatopoeic in origin.
