Uncertain. Possibly related to *𑀨𑀼𑀘𑁆𑀘 (*phucca, defective) and Sanskrit फक्क (phakka, crippled) and बण्ड (baṇḍá, maimed). Part of the Indo-Aryan "defective" group of words. Cognate with Kashmiri [script needed] (phrika), [script needed] (phyokᵘ).
