Prakrit

Etymology

Both Turner and Mayrhofer posit a connection to Sanskrit पाषाण (pāṣāṇa, stone) and पाषी (pāṣī, stone), both of which underwent a pan-Indo-Aryan s > h shift which is irregular outside of Northwest Indo-Aryan and Sinhalese. If this is true, then this word is from *पाष (*pāṣa, stone) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-). Compare Prakrit 𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀸𑀡 (pāhāṇa), 𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀡 (pāhaṇa, stone).

    Noun

    *𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀸𑀟 (*pāhāḍam (Devanagari *पाहाड) (Proto-New Indo-Aryan)

    1. rock, hill
