Prakrit

Etymology

Probably with 𑀧𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀬 m (paḍḍaya, buffalo), 𑀧𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀻 f (paḍḍī, cow or buffalo that has calved once), 𑀧𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀺𑀬𑀸 f (paḍḍiyā, small buffalo cow), 𑀧𑀸𑀟𑀻 f (pāḍī, young buffalo), 𑀧𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀻 f (paḍḍacchī, buffalo cow), 𑀧𑁂𑀟𑁆𑀟 m (pĕḍḍa, buffalo), 𑀧𑁂𑀟𑁆𑀟𑀸 f (pĕḍḍā, cow), all borrowed from Dravidian. Compare Kannada ಪಡ್ಡೆ (paḍḍe, fitness for breeding), Telugu పడ్డ (paḍḍa, a female buffalo or cow fit for breeding).

Alternatively, related to Sanskrit पष्ठवह् (paṣṭhaváh, a bull four years old), but this is more unlikely.
