Prakrit

Etymology

Connected with *𑀧𑀕𑁆𑀕𑀟𑀇 (*paggaḍaï)—whence Punjabi ਪਗੜਣਾ (pagaṛṇā) and Odia ପଗଡ଼ିବା (pagaṛibā)—, from 𑀧𑀕𑁆𑀕- (pagga-, to seize) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀟- (-ḍa-). The devoicing of -𑀕𑁆𑀕- (-gga-) to -𑀓𑁆𑀓- (-kka-) is unexpected. Perhaps influenced by 𑀓𑀟𑁆𑀠𑀇 (kaḍḍhaï, to pull), 𑀧𑀓𑀟𑁆𑀠 (pakaḍḍha, dragged).

    Verb

    *𑀧𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀟𑀇 (*pakkaḍaï) (Devanagari *पक्कडइ) (Proto-New Indo-Aryan)

    1. to seize
