Etymology

Perhaps from the same source as Pali 𑀙𑀫𑁆𑀪𑁂𑀢𑀺 (chambheti, “is stiff, petrified”), with the prefix 𑀆- (ā-). Turner suggests a relation with the Sanskrit 𑀲𑁆𑀓𑀪𑁆 (skabh, “to prop up”) root, from Proto-Indo-European *skebʰH- (“to support”),^[1] whence Vedic Sanskrit 𑀲𑁆𑀓𑀫𑁆𑀪 (skambhá, “pillar”) and 𑀆𑀲𑁆𑀓𑀪𑁆𑀦𑀸𑀢𑀺 (ā́skabhnāti, “is fixed firmly”).^[2]

On the other hand, descendants appear to derive from *𑀅𑀘𑁆𑀘𑀁𑀪 (*accaṃbha), for which compare also 𑀅𑀘𑁆𑀘𑀩𑁆𑀪𑀼𑀬 (accabbhuya, “very wonderful”), from Sanskrit 𑀅𑀢𑁆𑀬𑀤𑁆𑀪𑀼𑀢 (atyadbhuta).
