Etymology

Ellipsis of māla mattiāna, plural of mālum mattiānum (literally “Matian apple”), referring to a variety of apple developed by Gaius Matius: a Roman horticulturist.[1] The meaning of apple was transferred to *mattiāna after ellipsis took place, and it was reanalyzed as a feminine singular noun.
