Ashokan Prakrit *𑀓𑀼𑀟
Uncertain.
- Per Burrow, borrowed from Dravidian, ultimately from Proto-Dravidian *kōẓ- (“son, young one; new”); compare Tamil குழ (kuḻa, “young”), Kannada ಕೊಡ (koḍa, “youth”).[1] Compare Sanskrit कुणक (kuṇaka, “young animal”), Proto-New Indo-Aryan *𑀓𑁄𑀭 (*kora, “fresh, new”), Sanskrit कोरक (koraka, “bud”), कुड्मल (kuḍmala, “filled with buds”).
- Alternatively claimed to be from Munda (compare Santali ᱠᱩᱲᱤ (kuṛi)), but the directionality of borrowing may rather be the other way.
