Suggested to be from Proto-Sarmatian *idāwag, from Proto-Scythian *witāwaki, from Proto-Iranian *witā́wakah, from *wi- +‎ *tā́wHā (lord, deity) +‎ *-akah.[1] Related to χουτζαυ (khoutzau /⁠⁠*xuččaw⁠/, god).
