From Proto-Sarmatian *iδaǰ, from Proto-Scythian *wiδači, perhaps from earlier *wiδawači, from Proto-Iranian *HwidáwaH. Cognate with Sogdian 𐫇𐫏𐫔𐫇𐫝⁠ (wyδwc /⁠wiδauč⁠/, “widowed⁠”).
