From Proto-Sarmatian *ɣaždug, from Proto-Scythian *gažduki, from Proto-Iranian *gáždukah (whence Khwarezmian 𐾳𐾸𐾴𐾻 (ɣzdk, “rich”)), from Proto-Iranian *gážduš (whence Shughni [script needed] (yåzd, “storeroom”)), related to Proto-Iranian *ganǰam (whence Old Median *ganǰam (“treasure, wealth”)). Ultimately of unknown origin, but presumably from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰáždʰuš, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰé(n)ǵʰ-tu-s ~ *gʰ(n̥)ǵʰ-téw-s, from *gʰé(n)ǵʰ- +‎ *-tus.
