From Proto-Sarmatian *šāg, from Proto-Scythian *šāki, from Proto-Iranian *ćraHakah, related to Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćr̥Hwás (“horn”). Cognate with Khotanese [script needed] (śśājsano, “fork”). Unrelated to Proto-Iranian *cā́xaH (“horn, branch”) (whence Persian شاخ (šâx)), which would have regularly yielded Ossetian **sax.
