• The misspelling "Portugese" (Portugal +‎ -ese) mimicks the pattern of the spelling of words ending in -ese such as Viennese, Maltese, Chinese, Togolese, Beninese, Congolese, Milanese, Parmese, Japanese, Faroese, and Vietnamese. In the correctly spelled Portuguese, the function of the second U (the letter often mistakenly omitted) is to signal a hard G sound; a G followed by an E might otherwise signal a soft G, such as in cringe or exaggerate. The spelling of the equivalent Portuguese-language term also has two U's: português.
