Late 18th century, from English pony. Until the earlier 20th century often masculine; the neuter was reinforced by analogy with Pferd n.

From the similarity of the haircut with the mane of a pony. The older masculine gender may have been preserved here, or it may be a backformation from Ponyschnitt m (literally “pony cut”). Compare Dutch pony.
