poly- (“multiple”) +‎ Ancient Greek πώγων m (pṓgōn, “beard”). While 'πώγων' ends with the typical neuter suffix '-ων', it is masculine, not neuter or feminine, so it is unknown why the grammatical genders changed in these genera.
