From platy- (“flat, broad”, from Ancient Greek πλατύς (platús)) + Ancient Greek ῥῑνός (rhīnós, “nose”) + -us (adjectival suffix), literally “flat-nosed/broad-nosed”. Doublet of Platyrrhinus.
