From Russian ОМО́Н (OMÓN), which is short for Отря́д Моби́льный Осо́бого Назначе́ния (Otrjád Mobílʹnyj Osóbovo Naznačénija, mobile special-purpose detachment) or Отря́д Ми́лиции Осо́бого Назначе́ния (Otrjád Mílicii Osóbovo Naznačénija, detachment of special-purpose police) when Russian police was called the militsia.
