nuage +‎ de +‎ Magellan. Named after Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. From the cloud-like appearance of the Magellanic Clouds (“Nuages de Magellan”), discovered on the circumnavigation of the world voyage of discovery headed up by Magellan during the Age of Exploration.
