Etymology

From Middle High German milch, from Old High German miluh, from Proto-West Germanic *miluk ~ *meluk, from Proto-Germanic *meluks. Cognate with German Milch, Dutch melk, English milk, Danish mælk, Icelandic mjólk.

The Luxembourgish form continues Middle High German milch, not the uncontracted variant milich, which latter would have yielded *Millech (with /i/ in an open syllable). The svarabhakti vowel regularly redeveloped between /l/ and a non-coronal consonant (cf. Kallef, Vollek etc.).
