Lesart f (genitive Lesart, plural Lesarten)

  1. reading, way of deciphering a text that is ambiguous (e.g. because it lacks diacritics, uses nonstandard spelling, is written in an obscure language or illegible hand etc.)
    Synonym: Lesung
    Konsonantenschriften lassen oft mehrere Lesarten zu.
    Consonant scripts (abjads) often allow for different readings.
  2. (by extension) textual variant, version (any of the ways in which a phrase has been recorded in different manuscripts of the same text)
