From the Hanyu Pinyin romanization of the Mandarin 喀什 (Kāshí), short for 喀什噶爾/喀什噶尔 (Kāshígá'ěr), from Manchu ᡴᠠᠰᡳᡤᠠᡵ (kasigar), from Written Oirat ᡍᠠᠱᡅᡎᠠᠷ (xašiɣar), from Classical Persian کاشغر (Kāšġar).
