Etymology

From a presumed Middle Low German *gelmȫre, with shortening of the long vowel of the element gēl (“yellow”). The second element, mȫre, represents Old Saxon morha, from Proto-West Germanic *morhā (“wild carrot”). For a name formed along similar lines, see Southern German gelbe Rübe (literally "yellow root vegetable"; earlier forms of both Low German and High German lacked fully-lexicalised terms for the color orange and some varieties of carrot still cultivated in Central Europe appear more yellow than orange in any case).
