Etymology

Borrowed from Adyghe хьатыкъуай (ḥatəqʷaj). From the name of Price Hatuqo (Хьатыкъо (Ḥatəqʷo)), founder of the Hatuqay Principality; historical political entity in Circassia, from which the tribe derives its name.[1][2] A prominent folk etymology connects the name to the Hatti and Hittite civilizations.[3][4][5]
