From Latin globus (globe, sphere) +‎ Ancient Greek θᾰ́λᾰμος (thắlămos, inner room) +‎ -ea. Coined by researcher and protozoologist Jan Pawłowski, Swiss protozoologist Maria Holzmann and Polish zoologist Jarosław Tyszka in 2013.
