Low German

Noun

Geschicht f (plural Geschichten)

  1. (uncountable) history
  2. story

Luxembourgish

Etymology

Ultimately from Middle High German geschihte. The expected form is *Geschiicht; that with a short vowel must have been borrowed from or at least influenced by German Geschichte. The same is also true of the uncountable sense “history”. However, the dated word Geschiichtemes (rumour, foreboding, spectre) is inherited (and formally comparable with German Geschehnis, Dutch geschiedenis).
