Etymology

From Middle High German vinster, Central Franconian variant of venster, from Old High German fenstar, from Latin fenestra.

The line for the development st > scht runs further south in this word than normally. It is possible that many dialects had developed a denasalized form *Fiischter, which is attested on the German side of the border. When this was later displaced, the northern form with nst may have penetrated deeper than otherwise expected. Feminine gender is widely found in Central Franconian.
