By surface analysis, Ancient Greek δῐχοτομῐ́ᾱ (dĭkhotomĭ́ā, “dichotomy”) +‎ -us (masculine suffix). Contrast Ancient Greek δῐχότομος (dĭkhótomos, “dichotomous, cut in half”). Coined by English entomologist Frederick William Hope in 1838.
