Borrowed from South Levantine Arabic بقيلة (bqēle), from Classical Arabic بُقَيْلَة (buqayla), the diminutive form of بَقْلَة (baqla, “purslane”). As an initial /bk/ consonant cluster is forbidden in Spanish, the /u/ of the classical form was reinserted to break it up.
