From austro- (“south; southern”, in this case referring specifically to Australia, where they were found) +‎ Ancient Greek γρᾰφή (grăphḗ, “painting, drawing”).

Coined by botanist Laurens Sparrius, Australian lichenologist, chemist John Alan Elix, and Australian lichenologist Alan William Archer in 2010.
